WIPO Young Experts Program

Deadline: 6 October 2022

Brief.

One of the main priorities of the World Intellectual Property Organization is to bring young people closer to the intellectual property (IP) ecosystem. It is no longer difficult to implement this initiative through the “WIPO Young Experts Program”.

Launched last year, this program invests in talented young people with diverse backgrounds. Young researchers acquire technical knowledge of intellectual property and develop leadership skills during the two years of the program. They are mentored by experienced colleagues of the Organization and given the chance to interact with the leadership of WIPO.

Applicants must be available to participate in the two-year program for 2023-2024 and must expressly confirm this at the time of application. The age limit for the candidates applying for the program is 35 years and below.

The group of eleven young experts who joined the program at the beginning of 2022 have already signed a number of works in different parts of the world: One of them led academic research on the formulation and implementation of Intellectual Property policies for Small and Medium Enterprises in Pacific Rim countries, another helped develop technological solutions to clean the ocean from plastic waste in the Caribbean. Yet another coordinated the successful release of a report on hydrogen technologies. Projects include new areas for economic research, including the role of intellectual property in film financing, as well as regional projects for women entrepreneurs in the Central European, Baltic and Mediterranean regions.

Along with all this, young researchers participating in the program will also benefit from:

  • Monthly stipend of 5,000 SWISS FRANC;
  • Medical and accident insurance;
  • Travel expenses (If necessary, WIPO will assist in obtaining an entry visa to Switzerland).

There are a number of requirements for those who wish to apply:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • At least two years of intellectual property experience (desirable);
  • Project management experience (desirable);
  • Knowledge of any other official languages of the United Nations (desirable);
  • Analytical, organizational, research and teamwork skills;
