The European Commission and the High Representative have adopted a Joint Communication act on a strengthened European Union Maritime Security Strategy to ensure the safe use of the seas and protect the maritime areas from new threats. An updated Action Plan for the implementation of the Strategy was also adopted.
Maritime security is of crucial importance for the European Union and its Member States. The European Union Member States together form the world’s largest combined exclusive economic zone, the economy of the European Union depends to a large extent on the security of the oceans. More than 80% of global trade is carried out by sea, and about two-thirds of the world’s oil and gas reserves are either produced offshore or transported by sea. Up to 99% of global data traffic is transmitted via submarine cables.
The European Union intends to strengthen the wide range of instruments at its disposal to ensure both civil and military maritime security.
