Application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Azerbaijan v. Armenia) – International Court of Justice

Azerbaijan has sent a letter to the International Court of Justice regarding Armenia.

The International Court of Justice, being the supreme judicial body of the UN, regulates interstate relations. Its main tasks are to settle legal disputes between states and to provide advisory opinions on legal issues submitted to it by competent international bodies and institutions.

Azerbaijan appealed to the International Court of Justice on the basis of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 21, 1965, and its main directions are the fight against all forms of racial discrimination and the cooperation of states for this.

In the appeal, the Azerbaijani side presented to the Court confirmed information that Armenia has not implemented the temporary protection measures determined by the decision of the International Court of Justice dated December 7, 2021. The main demands given by Azerbaijan were the return of the internally displaced persons who suffered as a result of the conflict to their lands, the guarantee that the mines hidden by Armenia in the liberated territories, as well as any other explosive devices, would not be used.
